The following are the known children of William Hamby by his second marriage:
John Hamby, born 1764.
Thomas Hamby, born around 1770.
The first Thomas
The first Thomas, born about 1770, appears in the 1800 census as Thomas Hambey, a male between 26 and 45. The assumption is that the Thomas in the 1800 Buncombe census is William’s son because they were the only Hambys living in Buncombe at that time and Thomas was living next door to William Hamby. It’s likely that he is buried in Tabernacle Cemetery.
Children of the first Thomas Hamby:
Thomas Lee Hamby, born about 1808.
Two or three additional sons and one daughter.
The second Thomas
Thomas Lee Hamby, born about 1808, died before 1850. We know he’s related to William Hamby, who died in Cades Cove, Tennessee, but we do not know how he was related. We surmise William was Thomas Lee’s grandfather. This is the Thomas Hamby who’s gravestone disappeared from Tabernacle Cemetery in Black Mountain.
He married Susan Lytle in 1831, the daughter of Millington “Blind Milt” Lytle and Mary “Polly” Potillo. Blind Milt was blind after his eyes were punched out in a fight. Mary was born 1812 and died 1892.
Thomas appears in 1840 Buncombe Co., NC census as Thomas Hempy or Hembly. In the 1850 census only Susan appears with continued misspellings of the last name. Susan is listed as a widow in Millington Lytle’s will.
